REVIEW BY DICK WOOD

Just got back from TSSD's San Antonio show. What a fantastic time! Much like last year. San Antonio is beautiful with its incomparable River Walk, historic missions (including the Alamo, of course), incredible restaurants, and many exhibits/museums.

Best of all was the hospitality and good fellowship Nick and Deanna provided. Dealers and collectors were entertained Friday night with a party at Mad Dogs and Englishmen, a pub on the Riverwalk that I think Andy Neilson owns (Andy wasn't there this year unfortunately). Both N & D have a way of making everybody feel welcome and relaxed, so there was lots of fun, many toy soldier stories told, and, of course, a great selection of toy soldiers to look at.

This included TSSD's New WWII Germans, Steve Weston's Banditos (also evident at the Plastic Warrior show in London that a group of us attended as part of a castle tour of England), and the Marxman with some new medieval siege equipment that included huge siege towers, battering rams, ladders, wooden shields for bowmen to hide behind, etc.

Ron Barzso had his New Inn at San Antonio alongside his river sections (REALLY neat - I'm hoping to build a moat with mine), and his breached wall for the castle. Rick Eber was at the Texas show with lots of old plastic as were others and, as always, there was spectacular metal to see as well.

Gary Dutko was at the show and was very willing to help people learn his pose changing techniques for plastics. Lovely guy. Ed Gannon had his reproduction Mexican hats for sale (I bought one last year and have had a hoot with it). He also concocted some bogus Mexican medals that were a fun to buy ($15). They'd go nicely with his hats. The new TSSD Germans, BTW, are about the best troops they've done so far, in my opinion. The photos on the web site don't do them justice. Multiple parts, virtually no undercutting, and terrific sculpting. The machine gun team and panzerfaust guys are the best of the group in my view.

REVIEW BY ERIC JOHNS

Oh...I had a great time.  I like the fewer number of dealers because it gave me time to talk longer with the ones there.  And I think there was more plastic than metal!  I spent more than I planned to.  And there is plenty to do otherwise.  We did not even get over to the IMAX or get to take a boat ride on the river.

Brackettville, Texas - home to John Wayne's Alamo -  was fantastic, and I would really like to go back and spend an entire day looking over every one of the buildings there.  I took some notes on the general store as a possible building to make from scratch.  It is a pity that compared to several years ago -- or at least as far as I can see from my brief research on the Net -- the place was having more effort put into it in the past.

The entertainment was just great, but we found only one single postcard of the place in the stores and I saw a much better handout for the village on Ebay that was from several years ago.  But perhaps it was a bit down because so few people were there on Memorial Day and the summer season had not started.  I spoke with the head guy there -- David Lee Murray -- who is just a great singer and actor who could be doing very well in "higher places" if he wanted, and he said they have about 8,000 visitors each summer.  That seems really low to me for what is there.

I purchased one of the last two paperback books the store had on the village and its construction, and it says at one time the rancher intended to make it a major entertainment site.  Maybe that dream died when he passed away.  And, speaking personally, I much preferred wandering the grounds there with only 25 or so visitors, rather than trying to have fun at Disneyland while dodging the other 40,000 people that surely were there on Memorial Day!

Thanks for a great time.  I'm planning to spend some more money at the big Marx Convention in West Virginia next month, but I do hope to see you in July.

REVIEW BY BOBBY MOORE

Had a great time at the Texas Show. The Holiday Inn Express we stayed in was nice The rooms were big, with a living room type area and a bed area. Also had two T.V.'s. The hotel staff went out of their way to help my wife and I.

Got to the show a little before 9:30, there was already a good group of people waiting to get in. Nick greeted everyone at the door making all feel welcome. Walking in, I felt like a kid in a toy store seeing all the cool stuff.

First stop was at TSSD booth to get two bags of their new Elite Germans, an Italeri German Anti tank gun, and some Conte U.S. machinegun teams they brought for me. Deanna was running the TSSD booth and was doing a good job of it. Cannot say enough good things about the new TSSD Germans. Great poses and nice detailing on them. My favorites are the machinegun team and the panzerfaust guy. The Italeri Antitank gun is very well done. My Germans got reinforced big time and are going to make it hard on my Dog faced G.I.'s. Also got a bunch of loose figures TSSD had for sale.

The Marxman had a whole boatload of stuff. Just about anything you could want. I got a good bunch of Conte G.I.'s from him to use for conversions. Hobby Bunker had a good bit of stuff also. A lot of King and Country and other metals as well as some of their buildings and plastic figures. Matt had a box of loose WW2 Conte figures that he kept adding to throughout the show. I got my share of them.

Rick Eber had some nice old loose plastic. He also had a beautiful MARX Civil War set and a Wagon Train set. Ed Gannon was there. I know Ed from the Big D shows in Dallas. Ed had several containers filled with bags of old figures and accessories. It is always fun to dig through Ed's stuff, you never know what you will find. I found some nice flat dark green MARX Marines that I bought from ED. It was hard to resist them they looked so cool.

I got one of the Pegasus  River Sets. Its nice and works good with my Airfix checkpoint bridge. Got a look at Barzos Robin Hood figures and breached Castle Wall. Nice stuff. If I collected that Era, these would be at the top of my list. Also talked to Mr. Barzo and his wife. Nice folk as we would say here in East Texas.

There were other dealers there and lots of other nice stuff. Just didn't have enough of the green to get everything I wanted, but I got plenty enough to keep me happy for a while.

My wife and I had a nice Sunday looking around in San Antonio. The carriage ride is a must if you have your wife with you. On Memorial Day, we visited with my Dad in San Marcos. He was in the Navy in WW2. We spent time looking at his old Navy photos and listening to some of his stories. I can't think of a better way to have spent my Memorial Day.

Thanks again to Nick and Deanna for their friendliness and for putting on the Texas Show. I hope all the dealers did well enough to come back for a Texas show next year.

REVIEW BY MIKE KUTNICK

To all; I'd just like to add to Dick's previous report. The Second Annual Texas Show was a lot of fun even though it was a touch warm; a balmy 99 on Sat. and a cooler 98 on Sunday. There were about 44 dealers present with both plastic and metal.

There were some new products available. TSSD had their new Germans plus Pegasus figures and accessories. K and C had their new metal Second series Alamo sets including two hand to hand combat sets. John Stengel had some new 40mm Alamo wargaming figures and buildings. The Mexican Banditos and two new Replicant sets were offered by Steve and Linda Weston. Ron Barzso brought his new Robin Hood castle breached wall, village buildings and new river bed sections, and Matt Murphy from Hobby Bunker had the new Conte' Persians along with a choice selection of metal and plastic figures. Rick Eber had some really nice vintage stuff as always, including a beautiful Marx Wagon Train box set.

Nick and Deanna deserve a huge thank you. They put a lot of work and advertising into this show. They were very well organized and went out of their way to make sure the sellers had what they needed; box cutters, water, name cards, etc....And to show their appreciation to the dealers they gave each of them some very thoughtful thank you gifts.

They also handed out bags of Civil War guys to the kids and had donated door prize drawings for the buyers. Floor traffic was very heavy until about one on Sat. and then tapered off during the day. Late Sunday some bargains could be had has dealers started to pack up [ bags of Conte' figures at half price for example].  All in all; a long, tiring. little warm, and Great Show.

If they do it again, make plans to attend. You won't be disappointed.
