It really helps to simulate a Roman/Barbarian battle.
The Barbs mounted a pinning attack against the front of the Roman line, then hit them on their left (the Roman left) flank with half their forces concentrated against just two centuries (the individual formations of Roman soldier you see are centuries of 80 men, although the century one the far right was considerably stronger).
I realized a Roman century would simply, under its own initiative, change formation as would adjacent centuries, effectively forming different types of square. as their situation demanded. Their discipline, unit cohesiveness, and training/experience would permit them to stand their ground, not panic, and execute formation changes as necessary, adjusting the Roman line to suit local threat. Once the Barbs had penetrated the Roman line, essentially surrounding them, they found that they'd moved themselves into a killing field.
Losing momentum because they weren't fighting as distinct units that reacted intelligently to battlefield change and because they no longer had designated targets within the Roman line they were assigned to attack, they lost direction and momentum, not knowing which century to attack first and not capable of coordinated effort at that point in the battle.
The Romans, in the meantime, were used to improvising strategies their basic unit of combat, a century, could construct as a situation called upon it to do so. In this instance, the various ranks of each century directed devastating, organized volley fire at the barbarians who had "penetrated" them. Well placed archery and light artillery also helped enormously, as one would think it would have at a real battle.

TERRIFIC CONVERSION BY GARY DUTKO, CONVERSION ARTIST

WHEN WE BEGIN OUR NEW "RESIN" PRODUCTION IN THE U.S.A., THIS FIGURE WILL PROBABLY SHOW UP AS A SINGLE.
FROM OUR FRIEND AND COLLECTOR
"WILD" BILL WARD
BILL HAS BEEN WORKING ON A NUMBER OF CONVERSIONS OVER THE PAST FEW ( winter ) MONTHS, AND I MUST SAY THAT HIS HARD WORK HAS REALLY PAID OFF!
USING A COMBINATION OF TSSD / PARAGON FIGURES, AND OTHERS, HE HAS CREATED QUITE A FEW "LITTLE WORKS OF ART".
Hi Nick and DeAnna:
Finally got my conversions finished. Can only send five attachments at a time
so am sending to you in parts.
Hope you can use some of these in your "What guys do with their stuff" Section
Still got to learn to do better digital photos but think you can get the jist
of my ideas.
Here are some Cavalry Conversions you
might like. I found a paint here at one of the
local hobby stores that is very close to TSSD and Paragon. Being the proprietary holder
of the molds you may be able to tell the difference in these painted conversions but
I had no choice as mixed lite blue and medium blue parts to build some of the figures.
As you can see, I have been a busy fellow on this cold and snowy New York Winter.
Here are some final conversion photos I
thought you might like.
All photos are in the 640 x 480 mode as we discussed one day shortly past.
All these were done using only an xacto knife, utility knife, and some Super Glue Gel.
All paint jobs are hand painted by little ole me so you can see I still have quite
a ways to go in painting and why I ordered some of your pre-painted items.
Please let me know what you think overall.
Thank the Almighty for getting me into something decent and helping me keep my
mind active and doing something I like that is history related.
NICE JOB ON THESE GUYS, BILL!
EXCELLENT MOUNTED CONVERSIONS!
THANKS VERY MUCH FOR SHARING WILD BILL!!
TIM SENT US THIS PHOTO FROM HIS CELL PHONE, SHOWING HIS GRANDSON PLAYING WITH ALAMO SOLDIERS AND SOME FAMILIAR LOOKING BUILDINGS.

are for model railroad layouts.

( SORRY THIS TOOK SO LONG, JOEL! )
Nick and Deanna:
I've attached several jpg images and a couple that I had to crop in powerpoint format. As I mentioned, the images represent my (non)historical recreation of the attack on Ft. Stedman.
As you know, the attack on Ft. Stedman was Lee's final offensive push against the Union during the Petersburg campaign. The Confederates briefly held Ft. Stedman following its attack, led by General Gordon, early on March 25,1865; but the Union counterattacked and drove the rebs back with great loss to Gordon's forces. In this recreation, Gordon and his lieutenants were able to re-organize and attack a second time in coordination with Fitzhugh Lee's cavalry that attacked at the rear of Ft. Stedman. Union forces under Gen. Burnside sent in reinforcements, but in the chaos and fog of battle it is uncertain which side holds the upper hand.
I've got a mix of manufacturers in the diorama, as you can tell (Marx, Conte, K&C, Britain, TSSD, Barzso, plasticunderground, etc.). Of course, the reb cavalry are provided by TSSD and there are several TSSD infantry in the mix, both Union and Confederate. In my opinion, the most interesting "personalities" are offered by TSSD and Conte's metal figures. There is about a 70/30 mix of plastic to metal, and I painted about 65% of the figures and all of the diorama pieces. I even painted or painted over the large Conte defensive pieces to better match the other pieces and the real soil substrate -- yep, that's right, as you've said: "play 'em in the dirt!"

Hi Nick & Deanna,
Hope you are both well & ready for the holiday's. I received these from Steve on saturday & have been painting at every opportunity (between going to work, looking after the kids while my wife was working & Remodeling our kitchen wich my wife wants done for Christmas) Now these might not be my best paint work becaues I was in a hurry,But they are certainly the best detailed plastics I have ever painted bar none! I did not have time to paint the 2 mounted figures as i did not think I could do the horses justice (Do you think I could have Compton Creel's email address to ask his advice on horse flesh?) There is one special holiday figure I hope you like. Must go now & put my two young sons to bed(future collectors definitely) Wishing you both a merry Christmas & a happy new year.
P.S. Keep those great figures coming!
P.P.S. The old longcoat figure is converted to look like St'Clair Mullholland of the Irish Brigade at Fredricksburg as seen in the film Gods & Generals & The cannons are 2nd edition B.M.C. with more robust wheels fitted.
THANKS FOR ALL THE GREAT PHOTOS BRIAN!
AND FOR "FATHER CHRISTMAS"!!
